neko case- fox confessor brings the flood (2006), middle cyclone (2009)

i didn't know much about this lovely woman before this month, when i wandered into her endearing set at lollapalooza (i was there to see dan auerbach and lou reed). she was effortlessly amazing; bellowing out perfect country croons and dusty rock confessions. also, the sound was perfect. she really makes cat power look pretentious in comparison, IMO. here's two recent albums, which are both fantastic.

DOOM - born like this (promo sampler)

well, it's been 4 years since DOOM (no more MF) has dropped a proper album.  on march 24th, "Born Like This" is released on Lex.  this is a 5-track sampler.

crystal antlers - tentacles

last year's "EP" was one of the few new releases that i got generally worked up over.  the vibe was equal parts Doors wall-of-sound psy-fi, Bad Brains grime, and Built to Spill melodic churn.  this won't be released for another month; sadly, it is fated to be Touch and Go's last retail release for the near future.

synecdoche, ny

this is the directorial debut from charlie kaufman, which of course, he also wrote.  it's a dense, serious work with equal flourishes of off-beat whimsy, and grim humanity.  the actors are uniformly excellent , as they create a sort of human symphony, with hoffman as the orchestrator, plotting an epic staging of his ongoing existence, seeking to find tangible truth through their art.  missing is the deft expressionist palette of spike jonze or michel gondry, which honestly, could have made for a more robust viewing experience.  however, there seems to be something profound going on here, and i'm looking forward to seeing this again.

the black dog - spanners

excellent mid 90's downbeat techno/IDM; this elegantly walks the line between stark and sexy.  synthetic soundscapes meld cogently with early techno themes such as detroit sprawl and slick acid.  this seems to me to be at once completely representative of the time's burgeoning, wonky synergy between IDM and CGI, while completely in its realm being banged at a party.

*sorry.  i forgot to RAR it up, but mediafire is very fast*

stanley kubrick's "barry lyndon"

a staggeringly beautiful film that wreaks of authenticity and wit...and ryan o'neal's strangely placid performance.

*this is an average quality version(.mp4,) and is meant only as a convenient download alternative, in lieu of a high-quality dvdrip.*

the nexus of this great band's evolution from faux-marxist krautrock  to the faux-marxist space-pop they've dealt out, mostly, since then. one of the most ambitious, yet rewarding, pastiches of disparate genres(trip-hop, kraut, funk, neu wave, classical,) brilliantly juxtaposed with the coolly sweet harmonies of leticia sadier and the late mary hansen.

i'm usually not into collections, i prefer to pick out my own favourites from an artist's body of work.  but this album is unimpeachable in it's "greatness," as it not only collects nuggets from the past(help me make it through the night, uncloudy day,) but also includes brilliant turns from his last couple outings(always on my mind, angel flying too close to the ground.)  willy was at his soulful, earnest best at this time, having just starred in/soundtracked the moderate hit cowboy-artist flick "honeysuckle rose." i always appreciated the outlaw's ability to engender many different genres, while still retaining that authentic country feeling.

i want to post my favourite all-time albums in the next week or so.  these make up a sort of mission statement of aesthetics, and would end up on that deserted island with me...and, err, a solar-powered boombox.  this band, and particularly their debut, frequently(and mistakingly) are left out of "important band/album" discussions of the post-punk era.  they've always struck me as a  provincial, sincere take on the smiths, and harriet wheeler's girlish croon is undeniably wonderful.  this album is near perfect from start to finish.

TVOTR debut album(adebimpe & sitek only)

We made this disc OK Calculator and left it in cafes and just different places. Just 24 tracks of four-track stuff. And that's on-line now. We sold a few of them on our first tour, a couple, but then the CD burner broke, etc. That's on-line and someone wrote about it as "the extremely rare but superb OK Calculator" and I’m sitting there going, "Are you kidding me?" Rare, yeah, rare because we're making them ourselves, and superb, that's not up to us, but it's not superb. (laughs) I’d be the first person to tell you. There's more hiss on some of those songs than there are songs. And it's fun, and I love it, but I wouldn't call it superb.

the brown bunny OST

the movie was infamous for the BJ chloe sevigny threw down on brooding narcissist vincent gallo(admittedly, it was the high point of the film,) but, for me, the real saving grace is the impeccable soundtrack.  this was a japan-only release...

animal collective - MPP

yes, its real(and quite awesome.)

the curious case of benjamin button (DVDSCR)

a very interesting film, well worth the DL.  we all are familiar with fincher (fight club, panic room, zodiac,) and here he teams up with the screenwriter of forrest gump to make a very similarly themed film.  beautifully shot, with A-game performances from all; especially kate blanchett, who delivers, IMO, an award winning turn.  enjoy.
